All our yurts are handmade in the UK, and take a minimum of 4 weeks to build. All the frame members are steam bent and hand finished with a double coating of linseed oil.
Carefully selected, straight grain ash is used for the frame sourced from sustainable suppliers, and best quality cotton canvas, proofed in the UK to British Standards, is sewn for the covering. A great deal of detail is incorporated into the cover, making it simpler to use, more weatherproof and quick to ventilate.
Standard trellis height is 4ft 4” (1.3m), but the curved roof ribs give you about 5ft 8” (1.7m) at the walls. We also make a higher trellis at 5ft (1,.5m) giving headroom of 6ft 2 (1.88m) and a door of the same height. Overall height of the yurt varies from yurt to yurt, see the table below. Door height is 5ft 6” x 30” (1.7m x 72cm) wide, wider doors can be built. The trellis joins lock together to give a strong neat finish, no overlapping bulky joints.
All cords are in natural look rot resistant polyester braid. The cover is fire, rot and water retardant 393gm (12oz) natural cotton canvas, and has several new improvements to the design, making for quicker construction time and increased life of the canvas. Heavier weights of canvas are available for longer life in semi permanent situations.
The roof canvas has a central hole for the roof wheel.
The walls are attached to the roof draw cord with sturdy brass hooks, and snap on to the doorframe. They have a vinyl mud wall along the bottom to keep the canvas from sitting on the floor. The hook in system makes it very easy to lower the walls on hot days and let the breeze in. The wall also ties in to the groundsheet for added strength. Over the top of these ties is a draught flap that excludes draughts and conceals the groundsheet wall for a neat finish. The wall is in a minimum of two sections, this allows for easier fitting and more ventilation.
The roof wheel cap. This is a five-pointed star (sometimes six or more) with a clear central skylight, which ties down over the roof, and usually takes the flue collar if you are fitting a wood-burning stove.
Windows are optional, in optically good vinyl. Well worth considering, particularly in wet weather. Helps prevent that claustrophobic ‘cabin-fever’ feeling! Can wind up the neighbours on a wet day though, when they can see you with tea and crumpets a good book and warming your feet by the fire!
Groundsheets have an integral 6” (15cm) lip with draw cord all the way round. This reduces draughts, and improves water exclusion. It also makes it easier to put the yurt up, and protects the frame from damp. They are in dark brown as standard.
Canvas is white, sand or olive green. Roof wheel caps are available in mid blue, mid green, red, black, or standard white.
Jute tent carpets are made to fit the individual yurt and give a lovely finish to the space. Tuck the edges under the frame and it will stay in place. Any colour you like as long as it’s light brown! Heavier weight Coir carpets are available for exhibition/event sized yurts.
Serge liners give added colour and warmth to the interior of your yurt. Great for those autumn camping trips or party in the garden! Thicker felt liners are also now available for more permanent situations.
Yurts can be joined to give extra ‘rooms’, and mega, ‘clover-leaf’ yurts can be constructed.
We have also designed a range of commercially adapted yurts for events etc. These have a higher than standard trellis wall, allowing for taller doors. Wider doors can also be incorporated for improved traffic flow. The yurts have been designed to allow for a number of potential door positions and widths to give greater flexibility in use.
